JRed, big downsides, I used to run jet skis years ago and this was a feature.
But, imagine you go up at end of race buy the engine then you race it at next event, you get protested, engine gets stripped and found illegal? You get done and get a reputation for cheating! Or you buy it and then have to go to the expense of getting it checked. In concept its a good idea but there are many pitfalls, the same engine get bought back by the original person and round and round it goes.
There is no magic answer to this, the only constant that always stays is the quick people who know how their kit works and who spend time on prep work will always be accused of cheating by those not so good! :-(
