This is the key...
...it simply stops the weight of the kart landing on the driver if turned over.
and , no, you wouldn't need to be strapped in to benefit.
If you are thrown clear, then there is no difference, no matter what seat is used. But if you stay under the kart, the high back might just releive some of that 80kg from pushing your head into the track.
