Floating carriers enable the disc or sprocket some articulation movement compared to the carrier by being mounted on what are essentially dowel type bolts . Have a look at the pictures on Dartford kartings web site for 50mm axle equipment under floating carrier disc and sprocket for a good view of the items .
When an axle flexes the carrier goes with it and so does the sprocket , this alteres the chain run in relation to the engine sprocket . By allowing a little movement the flex is catered for and the chain run is kept truer.
