They were the first to provide an onboard starter and picked up a lot of those drivers who couldn't or wouldn't push to start. This included a lot of drivers who were over 30.

A lot of the 100's made a point out of not having a starter even when they became available.

They were adopted as a Super1 class, and benefited from the presumption that as such they were somehow superior to other classes.

More money could be made out of them than from other classes, so more effort was put into promoting them.
