Alfano problem

Hi All,
last meeting our Alfano started playing up in that we kept losing the display so, I checked the battery and it was showing 1v. As this is a 3v battery, I figured it was kernackered so I swapped it for a new 'un and now the lap timer doesn't work! I have run a magnet under the pick up and nothing happens - is this just a coincidence and the pick up has gone or is this down to settings?
The Alfano and the pick up were working fine, it just kept losing the display and then coming back.
The leads appear to be fine by the way, both metered out OK
