You say that you tried the spare buttons and they work fine. That sound rather odd. Have you got the right wires on the right buttons? The thin ones go to the switch and the thick ones go to the starter button. Have you remembered to connect the single lead from the starter to the loom connector? Is the battery good? If you know the battery is ok, get a piece of stout insulated wire and momentarily connect the live lead from the starter to the live terminal (not the loom) on the battery. The starter should engage but there will be a bit of a flash as you do it as the starter draws a lot of current. If it does not engage, then the starter may have a broken positive terminal inside the starter itself. Try wiggling the lead as you attempt to start the engine.
