Seriously though, the weight has to cover a large degree of variation. How much scientific testing has been done on this?

From what I've done with two different weight kids in the same kart, I've found that there is also a good degree of disadvantage from carrying large amounts of lead. A child who is 5kg over is probably on the same overall handicap as one carrying 10kg lead. It's not all about power to weight, driver to chassis weight ratio has a large effect on how the kart handles, not to mention the relative strength and fatigue levels.
