Let me try to explain it differently. Suppose we made an engine that had a flat torque curve. i.e. the size of the bangs were the same at all rpm. Clearly, you will accelerate faster the more frequently the bangs occur - aero & frictional losses aside, you will accelerate twice as quickly at 12000rpm than at 6000rpm.
Of course, in the real world an engine does not have a flat torque curve, and so there is a point in the rpm range where as the bangs get smaller past the torque peak and the revs increase, greatest power is developed.
The gearing, whether direct drive or gearbox, is irrelevant.
