The book says that a chain /sprocket drive can continue to function properly until wear amounts to 1.5 percent.

So, since most chains are around 100 teeth, if you measure it against a similar chain or on a chain guage and it seems to be over a link longer then it's ready to be binned.

The sprocket test (equally viable) measures wear over a much shorter distance and may fail a 'good' chain if the sprocket is worn.
