Posting a bit late now but I beleive both the arguments are correct.

The GPS can be very accurate at a certain circuit and widely inaccurate at another. The is partly due to how many satellites can be read to gain it's position and also the sampling rate (how many times per second it records) as Nik mentioned. The GPS module reads up to 9 satellites, MyTach watch 11 and I think the SmartyCam the same or possibly 2 more. This is the problem, reading 9 satellites can produce accurate lines which can definitely show actaul lines taken but quite often the GPS can vary between 6-9 satellites in one lap. If you press the 'NSAT' button on the measures tab you will see this changing throughout the lap. This then obviously effects speed as well, so as Nik said, using it to compare a team of drivers isn't always accurate enough. The Ebox is preffered because of this as it's just a wheel speed sensor. I actually used a GPS system in Orlando last week and it was working very very well. Another example is Rye House, where the top of the circuit underneath the power lines, struggles to keep up the number of satellites read but the rest of the track is ok. Buckmore then struggles because of it's cover. So GPS is great when it works, which mainly depends on location.

People mentioned throttle, brake and steering sensors but you have to have the Extreme Ebox to do this. Even if you have the smartycam.

Finally, the Pi is almost exactly the same as a Mychron4 with Extreme Ebox. The only real difference is software.
