If advising people to save their cash and spend it on more practice/race days instead of lining the pockets of the trade makes me a pompous idiot, then I am happy to be so labeled! Sometimes, the only way to assess which argument is right is by taking it to extremes....who would drive better, someone who had never driven a kart but spent hours in a classroom be told how to do it; or someone who had just spent the same number of hours actually driving & learning by themselves.
