What happened was that in the mid 90's, the MSA decided that karting was to no longer be a sport in its own right, but simply the first rung of the motor racing ladder. As such, it was marketed towards a different type of person to that which it had traditionally appealed. The sort of person who has plenty of money, and doesn't want to get their hands dirty! Shortly after this, Max came on the scene. An engine with mid range grunt that gave fast overall lap times, but which wasn't challenging out of the corners or at the end of the straights, allied to sticky tyres, meant that you no longer had to spend years learning how to drive a kart, and, in truth, unequal though some of the Max motors were, they were a lot more equal than the old 100's were!
