Yep - did both of my son's helmets in a Jenson Button replica because they both have the initials JB - looked OK till you got close up...
I actually used solvent based paints which you can based on what the helmet is made up of - I would suggest you go to your local car spray paint stockist and ask them, they should (will) have a variety of paints available possibly including water based. My local stockist also does paint in touch up aerosols and they are at a decent pressure so you do get a good 'fan' when painting and an excellent finish.
What I would suggest is get hold of a couple of old helmets and have a bit of a practice first
