Well Look on the news page and they say this.
U18.8. All classes must use axles of magnetic steel material with a maximum external diameter of 50mm and a minimum wall thickness of 1.9mm at all points.

I don't know if it was like that before however you would guess due to the added stress of long curcuit racing then gearbox karts would need thicker axle's than non gearbox karts.
