Alex, I don't know how limited your budget or transport is but have you taken a look at club 100. I've only raced them as part of the British University Karting Championship but they do plenty of arrive and drive races and are based out of Rye House (maybe they'd give you lifts to the races in exchange for helping out). Its 2 stroke, its relatively safe and equal and you'll learn a lot doing it.
