They are simply a numbered metal base with a metal rod fixed on - you put your wheels with the control tyres on the `spike' and hand them in at parc ferme - they give you a token with your race number on (same number as on the spike and different colours for each class).
When you go down for your next heat you hand in your numbered token and are given your `spike' and wheels/tyres ready to go on your kart.
The `spikes' make it much easier to handle the tyres in parc ferme.
