However, given that other libellous statements are likely to be in private e-mail etc, making the statement on a public / social forum is more likely to come to the MSA's attention than in a private communication.

"A competition can be an event"

Pedantically, a competition is that part of an event for which results are published, while an event comprises the whole jamboree, including practice laps for which results are not published.

One looks up both Competition and Event in the Blue Book Definitions.

So strictly speaking a competition cannot be an event, though I take your meaning that I was wrong in the inference that a competition was likely to be a series rather than an individual event.

But you merely highlight that the words must be read in the context of the Blue Book, within MSA racing, rather than the idea that competition means any competition anywhere. Otherwise the MSA might be hunting out any karter who took part in the Olympics, which might fall into a wider definition of 'competition' generally.

You also highlight the difficulty one encounters in writing any sort of regulations. Although it would seem to be an unreasonable belief that the MSA would try to shut down any other form of karting, since it is patently impossible and probably illegal under restraint of trade (tracks would not be allowed to run corporate events for example), yet you are prepared to believe it and try to spread the idea on a public web site. And, if rumour is correct, someone once challenged the MSA on this very issue in court.

As the MSA warning suggests, a public website is not the place to make such a claim. If one really felt that one had discovered a seriously bad bit of wording, then one should write to the MSA, highlighting why one thought the words were incorrect and suggesting a better solution.

There is some evidence that some few people are manipulating opinion by encouraging often inaccurate comments and complaints about the MSA, traders, other drivers etc; and the politics are damaging the sport as a whole. The rules, however, have to be applied to everyone.
