Sorry but I think you are right. Mine last expired in December 2007 and I rang the MSA last month about it. They said I had to renew this year (2012) or else I would be classed as a novice and have to take the ARKS test, medical and do six races on novice plates.

It's a complete joke really, to think that someone with a National 'A' license is going to be treated like they have never driven a kart in their life.

Another option is to do non-msa, it's growing across the country and there are a lot of ex msa racers going down this route. At the rate it's going it won't be long before the non-msa has bigger grids than msa.
