The way the costs can escalate is by running with your team at every race meeting - not just the S1 rounds.
Some teams will take their drivers away for a week over Easter practicing at the tracks for the rest of ther season. Maybe evn go to Spain over the winter.
Some teams may insist that you employ a mechanic etc.
If you worked on Ł2k per weekend and you race 3 or 4 times a month for 10 months then you can soon see where those figures come from.
