Kezz - the rule is that you can not use a heat gun but you can use a mechanical device to clean off the rubber - sureform or similar. The reason being that you are not allolwed to heat the tyres (plus a few incidents of fire from the hot rubber getting

The problem comes with enforcing the rules, especially at club meetings. If someone cleans their tyres with a heat gun inside their awning and then uses a sureform to rough up the urface a little then it may be difficult for the grid marshal (who is probably busy anyway) to prove that a heat gun was used.

I can understand your desire for an equal playing field but parents/teams still ignore the rules it just adds to the burden on club officials who are trying to keep the meeting running on time and give everyone a good day's racing.

In an ideal world all tyres would be checked on the grid with a temperature guage and a tyre sniffer but that would probably delay some races with parents/teams refusing to move their kart off the grid - demanding a second opinion from a scrutineer (who may be busy checkink karts from the last race) or the CoC.
