If you are trying to inflate a flat tyre then it won't work. The compressors at a garage rely on there being a pressure inside the tyre so they can measure the pressure of the air going into the tyre, if the tyre has no air pressure at all (flat as a pancake) then you will not be able to get it to work.

Best thing to do is inflate the tyre with a hand pump to about 10 psi (at a guess) and then the garage compressor will work.
