You'll love it... :)

I'm racing in the North, but the advice on chassis should be OK for anywhere. Tony Kart, Intrepid, Tal Ko seem to be the most attainable, and are all being run at a reasonable pace. Tony fetch a premium in cost, and are the most expensive for spares, but there is a wealth of advice available in the paddock on how to set them up because so many people run them. Don't buy a pre-2010 TKM homologated chassis, they can't really be made to work well with the current tyres. Buy the best you can afford, and unless you have a lot of kart knowledge or know someone trustworthy that has, buy from a dealer or manufacturer.

Your budget sounds realistic, if a little tight. I reckon on "per meeting" running costs of about £100-120 to cover tyres, chains, sprockets, fuel, oil, brake pads, etc. But you need to add in an engine rebuild or 2 per season, race entry fees, and fuel to and from the circuit. I'm pretty sure this will have you nudging up towards £250 a meeting. 2-3 meetings from tyres is a reasonable estimate, but if you get near the front you'll wish you could have new tyres every meeting. I've stretched to 4 meetings once this year and regretted it.

Don't worry too much about being competitive - if you pick the right club there's always someone to race against. Takes some time to get used to setting the kart up right and put it on the pace, and rather than humiliating yourself, you'll find most people that have been karting a little while will remember the frustration of starting out. I got no end of help and advice when I started karting in 2010, but it still took a few years before I could run a competent midfield race in MSA.
