They may use some software but the basic idea is that if you add up the three grid places for all drivers should be about the same.

So, if you have a grid of 30 then the three grids should add up to about 45 which could be a pole-1 point, a last-30 points and a middle-15 points.

If you have 6 novices starting from the back then you have 24 drivers who need to have a count of about 36.
