Unfortunately some scrutineers take the rules literally and by their own interpretation. Sometimes this results in utter silliness.

(Equally, some drivers will insist that the scrutineer check this or that on someone else's kart because it isn't exactly as specified.)

So I have heard of drivers being threatened with exclusion because the numbers on their number plate were not Arial with a thickness of n millimetres (see the Blue Book) but were a different font with a thickness of n-2 millimetres. The scrutineer backed up his threat / advice with the reasoning that if 'other fonts' were allowed, then someone would use Wingdings and claim that 'hourglass , page Icon" represented 62 .

At a different race, the winner was excluded because his battery went down on the grid. Someone shoved in a replacement battery, which started the kart, and the grid left the gate. Unfortunately the replacement battery wasn't the one specified in the book and in the winners enclosure someone else complained. Now we are allowed to use the external starter, so one might just have ignored the problem, though I have also heard a complaint that someone used the starter twice in the day. ( A valid complaint in its way, since people started disconnecting the charging circuit in Blue and latterly X30, to gain an extra nth of a horsepower by not charging the battery. This is also why the scrutineers demand that your terminals are taped on....not safety at all.)

And if you get a scrutineer who feels that any particular rule should be checked, then checked it must be.

Another version of silliness is the 'cannot weld a broken bumper' syndrome because the rules say that it must be one piece of steel, while allowing a chassis tube to be welded, even though the regulations say that it too must be a single piece of steel. Clearly (to me, anyway) the rule was designed to stop 'replaceable' ears, secured to the bumper by compression pipe fittings or badly welded and easily fractured joints in a bumper but a thread some while ago shows that people do have different opinions while believing that no-one would rely on anything less than a perfect chassis weld. (or that a scrutineer would be able to reject a bad chassis weld but unable to do the same for a dodgy bumper weld.)

This isn't meant to slag off scrutineers, merely to point out that everyone has their own definitions and interpretations. For example, would you exclude someone for writing down the wrong number on their scrutineering card...and would it make a difference if they were new or very experienced at karting?
