The trouble is that the genie is already out of the box.

The growth of plastic was a response to the increasing number of incidents where injury occurred. That increasing number of incidents was the result of better engines / faster karts and so on.

Faster karts, yes. The Formula Blue karts trace their ancestry back to the Formula A karts that came out of homologation in 1989. Their performance was maintained at the turn of the century when the aircooled 89's were phased out in favour of the water-cooled Lynx and for several years Lynx and 89's competed in the same class. Laptimes show that since then, speeds in the Blues have gradually increased, while other classes go even faster, due mainly, it seems, to stickier rubber than the Blues.

So to get an equal situation, it isn't enough to simply take off the plastic. One has to revert to slower overall speeds, because as the adverts tell us, even small increases in speed (Survive at 30, die at 40) make a big impact in the damage done.

This meaning reversing all the increases in roadholding, not just the engineering of caster camber units etc, but also the understanding that would allow karts to be built with 'personalised' caster and camber built in, just as TKM stubs used to come in a variety of settings.

And of course, since the growth of plastic was a response to the early 90's karts, we would have to regress even further. We might find that current Hire-and-Drive karts and their 4-stroke derivatives are turning in laptimes that are similar to the standard 100's of the 1980's.

We know that H+D is fun, it would not be such big business if it wasn't, but knowing that one could race current 100's some 4 to 6 seconds a lap quicker, don't you think people would do so?

It is , of course, correct that current retro karters have less accidents than their 'modern' equivalents but I suspect this is more about drivers having respect for one another than any caution about their vulnerability. On the other hand, it was recently said that IKR was safer than MSA-racing, a situation that lasts only until drivers with a greater will to win than respect for other drivers join in.

Meanwhile, let's keep the plastic, I have visited the tyres twice recently at Clay. Both incidents would have happened in the 90's and from experience, neither would have been as survivable then as they were today.
