Moving up to minimax. how to find right engine?

We are due to finish our time in cadet this year and move into minimax.(minimax only!) Due to the gossip and talk on forums and in paddocks about the huge differences in engines. How or what is the best way to find the right engine. Obviously everyone selling a great engine wil allow us to try it!? But unless we can get all of them together on the same day same time etc, with the huge discrepancies quoted it seems very hard to find the right one
