When my lad was in cadets we went to the Autosport show at the NEC and I was convinced to buy the Leatt neck brace.
These (or similar) are compulsory in motocross but so far neither the CIK/FIA or our own MSA has considered that there is sufficient evidence that they are needed.
My lad wore his for one session at Whilton Mill and did not want to wear it again. We loaned it to a few other lads but none seemed to like it.
They may help in certain types of `accidents' but may also make it worse in other types - there is just no definitive research.
If getting your lad to wear something like this makes you feel better (or your wife) then go for it. Maybe it is partly down to `fashion'. When my lad did S1 and SoT they were rarely seen but now a few more wear them.
Normally you will see a comment like "my lad was involved in a bad crash and broke his collar bone. I hate to think what would have happened if he was not wearing his neck brace".
The answer may be that he would have walked away but who knows!
