Hi Shaun,
I would not go lead/acid, been bit by that before. I think we got half a meeting before it disintegrated due to vibration/bumps/g forces etc. To be honest, we found when we were racing a Max that the Rotax battery was by far the most superior and reliable. Can't comment on lithium as never tried them.
A couple of (rather obvious) questions I would ask though are:
Is the battery the correct amperage?
Are you sure the battery holds it's charge and/or is being charged properly?
Is the battery wiring and the engine itself properly earthed?
