I wouldn't worry about the sensing wire for the magnetic strip, for the time being. The Alfano should be showing revs. Is the wire wrapped around the HT lead and correctly connected up to the alfano? The wire should NOT cross back on itself, if you overlap that wire then it gives all sorts of gobblydy gooch.

Also have you tried resetting the Alfano? If you have, are you sure you have got it set up correctly? 2 stroke? 4 stroke?

I'm going out for a bit but just done a quick search and you might find this info useful for the time being.
