Plus the top guys are usually with teams so they get the driver coaching, track walks to discuss lines. A lot of dads will be able to do this themselves but not all of them. Dad and son racing is also harder when things do not go right as if you have a bit of a row over driving it can take a while to settle down. If you can afford to be in a team at least after the driver has received their lecture you can say "well son/daughter we pay them to tell you where you are going wrong so you really should listen".
The other thing you will find in the championships is that you need to get accepted. As you know, two or three karts in a chain gives extra speed - probably far more than the `quick' engine. You can find that the top guys work with each other rather than with the `new kids'. This is mainly because they know each other and have confidence in their ability - if you are going down the straight at 50 mph in a downpour touching the guy in front then it does help to know that the guy in front will break where you expect it and not 10 yards earlier.
