If you have maybe run the friction disc down and overheated the other parts... the friction plate can become distorted and it gets concave and binds. Had this once. Not easy to see but a friction plate is basically flat in the middle contact zone so if its become a bit dished out in shape this can create a problem which leaves the whole assembly feeling a bit like direct drive.
