100% essential, if you want success. All the points in the other posts are good, what you can also try is being fast on cold tyres..this can win or lose you a race... a vast number of races are won on the first lap!

Even if you are not on the front row for the final, the best opportunity for gaining places is the opening 2 laps. Whenever we have been on the front row our motto has alaways been..try and win it on the first lap........this does not mean taking stupid chances and crashing, it means opening up a gap on the first lap and maintaining it
