Matt,

Check for air leaks along the fuel line.

Replace the external gaskets, between the airbox backplate, between the carb and spacer block, and between the spacer block and the engine.

Also check around the filter and backplate for any signs of an airleak or splits where air may leak in.

Try changing your oil seals, as Traxter said.

How much fuel did you have in the tank? Lack of fuel can cause a 'surge' where air is taken up instead, leading to what would seem veyr much like the problem you have.

What were your carb settings also?
