if you had an 84 on the rear and 12 front it is approx the same as a 77 rear 11 front i.e 7:1.
By keeping 84 on rear but 11 on front i.e 7.6:1 it is as if you stuck 7 teeth on rear.
Think this is right. Changing the front cog is a massive adjustment so i'd advise dropping a few teeth off the rear at the same time.
If you look through past posts it may well have been explained better.
