Don't wish to state the obvious but he needs to double peddle and ride the clutch. As much throttle as he can get with as much brake as he can get. When you release the break, the kart will go.

Also, most bad starts are down to too much fuel. He can try folding the fuel pipe with this right hand while doing the last couple of corners which will also help him get away.

If it runs OK in the race, the jet cannot be wrong can it?

Try it....(if he doesn't already.)
