Frankly I'd be very wary of the horsepower figures quoted back in the 70's. The BT82 Extreme pushes out 18bhp. It has a 4 port transfer port layout that is probably more efficient at scavenging the cylinder than the 70's 3 port plus (relatively) tiny 5/D ports. It has 15% more capacity, and an intake closing timing the same as a typical 70's tuned motor. I accept that possibly the best 70's motors might have had a small advantage, but would contend that an average extreme would be superior to an average 70's tuned rotary valve motor, and vastly superior to any "out-of-the-box" motor. Perhaps one of the historic karting boys with an engine to genuine period spec could contribute?
