In my experience, drivers regardless of their financial means, always think they have what it takes, even when it is obvious that they have not! Wealthy drivers spend to try to gain an additional advantage not to overcome lack of percieved talent.
Just for historical accuracy, when Hamilton started karting at Rye House in 1993, the HKC were getting enough entries to split the Cadet entry into 2 grids called something like Cadet Nouveo, and Cadet Celeray, each being the Italian for new & speedy respectively. Obviously LH was in the nouveo group as a novice along with the other novices and newcomers.
