On the BT82 and the Rotax Max..... not very often.
However, I suspect it's more needed on the KF motors and if you are using anything 'odd'.
However, he asked about what people were doing. It's been my experience that a large number of drivers simply flap their hand over the intake WITHOUT opening the throttle. Doing so has almost NO effect.... but they still do it becasue they have seen OTHERS do it! I can't seem to get people to do it properly unless I explain what it actually DOES!
It also explains why many people have problems starting their karts. If the can't 'choke', they often can't:-
* get the fuel 'up' from the tank * get the initial over-load of fuel for a start!
