yes you can use a ring but it isnt essential and you are correct in that the flex length is wrapped by the exhaust wrap,its then held together by several springs(hopefully you already know that)
note that the actual length of the flex is used as a tuning aid for any particular engine/track/gearing combination.the effect of this wont really be noticed by a novice but its something to investigate at a later stage.it maybe an idea to consult drivers at your particular track to get a ball park meseurement for flex length
there are people much more knowlegable than myself who could give you a fuller explination of how flex affects an engine
