Apologies for the long post, but I want some comments about a course of action I took today.

The Club my sons belongs to, (not going to name it), has a reputation for being a 'friendly club'. Unfortunately, in their quest to be all encompassing, some of the regulations that we all go on about here, are not always enforced. The sort of decisions made, depends a lot on which way the wind is blowing on that particular day!!

When we made our way to the dummy grid for our practice session this morning, I noticed one of the karts in our class had the old 'box' style bodywork on, which, as we all know, became illegal on 1st Jan. When I tackled the scrutineer about it, he told me that he had decided to allow the kart through because he felt it would be unfair to basically send the driver home. I was a little taken aback by this, expecially as the scrutineer has a reputation for being on the strict side, although he does a good job and I would rather have a strict scrut anyway. I decided not to take the matter further, basically as a gesture of goodwill, although, knowing that some of the other drivers had spent large amounts of money getting their karts modified to adhere to the regulations, I felt it a little unfair.

It soon became apparent that this particular driver was exceedingly quick and he won both of the heats, fairly and squarely. No problem there. When we lined up on the dummy grid for the Final, I noticed that he was not running a disc protector and that his exhaust was overhanging the rear bumper by a good 3 inches. My impression was that this driver could, basically, do what he wanted and I cannot accept that this is right. Obviously, he won the Final and my lad came second. When the karts came into Parc Ferme, I asked the scrutineer, if he was going to do anything about the winner's illegal exhaust? Having looked at it and realised that it was outside the regs., he took me aside and said that he was going to give him a telling off!! My reply was to say that if he didn't feel able to apply the regulations, I would protest about his illegal bodywork and that he could explain to the MSA how it was allowed to pass through initial scrutineering like that. I think that he was a little taken aback by this and the result was that the winner was DQ'd over the 'out of regulation' exhaust.

I want to point out that I didn't protest so that my lad could win. In fact, I would have been happy to give the winner's trophy away and accept second place. I do feel, however, that the regulations should be applied fairly to everybody, and not enforced, or not, at the whim of the scrutineer. I also have no doubt that my Son's kart will be vigorously checked at the next meeting, although we always do our best to run within the regs anyway.
