why do you want to know when the coil is triggered?

Is it for the rev counter?

Also, the pickup will be operating at a voltage quite a bit lower than the 12 volts you're looking for.

The pickup pulse will be occurring at the same time as the spark plug is firing so I would have thought that the pi would have an input that could be operated from the ht lead impulse.

The problem with cutting into the pickup lead is that you will fall foul of the Rotax regulations as you are introducing alien electronics into the system and could be accused of interfering with the timing, which is fixed.

I could certainly understand someone's objections as they wouldn't know what your pi system was doing, in between the cut ends!

You could be using software and electronics off the back or front end of the signal to alter the timing.
