First check that you have oil in the gearcase as no oil will indicate a leak there.
If not then move onto the other areas, get a can of WD40 ready to spray around all the potential areas it could be leaking from, the seal behind the starter gear, reed cage and the crankcase seal etc., start the engine and then set it to a fast tick-over using a cable tie on the throttle peddle and then when it is settled into a constant RPM, spray each area in turn with a little WD40 and listen for a change in engine note if you hear the change then you have found the location of the leak.
Failing that ask your builder to pressure test it for you, it should not cost much and will be certainly cheaper than a re-build.
