You missed out the following caveat to "that sentence" - "..(maybe your school has a metalworking facility ?).."

The guy is young (13 I think) and is trying to learn how to do his own maintainance which, in this era of Playstations etc, has got to be applauded.

Rather than give him the thankless task of lerning how to do this fiddly procedure with a handfull of grease and a lot of frustration I gave him a couple of options which he might be able to pursue at his school.
