John's absolutely correct.
The squish is usually measured in line with the gudgeon pin so that the tipping of the piston, however small, can't influence the reading.
If the squish is under the limit, you are looking at exclusion.
Glowing carbon can cause pre-ignition and damage an engine, so I don't think it's a recommendation!
TKM is even more unlikely to use carbon build up to exploit any rule, more likely to fall foul of one.
TKM has a squish measurement and also a head volume measurement and if the head volume is too small due to carbon build up, it will be an exclusion, especially with the equipment that is used at some places.
