Just had a look at the one I have (the one that started this thread) and (yes it came straight from the factory) the laser cutting is really poor on that as well, at the very base of it the laser-ing doesn't penetrate all the way through, hence on one side it is some 6-7mm shorter than on the other. Looks like the material re-welded soon after the laser passing.
Either qual control wasn't present or they decided to let it go.

I think this uneven aspect in the cutting, at the very base of the shoe where it gets its strength from, has contributed to the hairline crack. I can only assume that some twisting or uneven operation contributed to the damage.
Also, I couldn't help noticing some heat-marks where the shoes unevenly contacted with the drum. It looks like at least the one we had was poorly manufactured and malfunctioned.
The wear pattern is very similar to the old clutch shoes which gave uneven wear due to the "sprung" nature of the pins. I wasn't expecting that sort of effect from a clutch which is machined from one piece of metal! And certainly not given the helicoil design.
