I would check the starter motor first, one of the brushes may have sheered off. Did you try hitting it into the bendix on the grid with a hammer or picking the bak of the kart up and dropping it? It happens quite alot and they can suddenly start up when it's been hit/dropped a couple of times.

If that didn't work then it's either a broken starter brush or the powerpack is draining the battery too quick. A digital ignition I don't think is any more reliable but it's easier to get spares for them so worth the investment.
