Did it appear to pick up if he came off the throttle? If so, should it happen again, a quick fix during the race is to open the high jet to about 1/2. Whilst you still won't be on the pace, it will get the engine pulling at high revs again and may save a vital few places.

In the above case, assuming the carb isn't blocked (keep your fuel clean), replacing the diaphragms will fix it.
