I also suffered badly last season, having to pull up in a final as I could not drive through the tears. I could not breath also. It took 12 weeks to fix. I just hit a kerb on a different line.
I spent the summer in training and found that the extra fitness and strength training are helping already this season. Work on core strength and upper body fitness. You can do most of this at home without going to an expensive gym.
Also - I found that rib protectors vary in protection level and comfort. Try several makes to see if you can get it right.
Panadol and deep heat cream also help on race day... alomg with a beer afterwards!
