It sounds like you have a poor or no earth at all on the engine, electric is lazy just like water it will take the quickest and easiest route and sounds like that was you ! its only approx 30,000 volts honest ! them coils pack a punch !
fit a heavy duty strap between the coil and the engine make sure it has a good point of contact to both sides , i.e coil and engine, should be ok after that.
