Have a search through previous posts but here is my take on it
The big negative of direct drive is having to push start the kart. The biggest positive (in my opinion) is that there is less to maintain (no clutch, battery, starter motor, wiring and switches. I love how a direct drive kart feels to drive. You can change a clutched motor to direct drive quite easily and cheaply with a conversion sprocket. A direct drive engine has a shorter crank half so it is expensive to then decide you want or need a clutch. A day learning to bump start your kart (with lessons from someone who knows how) will be a day well spent. It is all down to technique.
